Nd: YAG laser

Side profile of woman during laser facial.

How It Works

The YAG laser, specifically the Nd laser, is highly effective in treating facial veins due to its unique properties. This laser emits light at a wavelength of 1064 nanometers, which penetrates the skin more deeply compared to other lasers. The light targets the hemoglobin in the blood vessels, causing them to heat up and coagulate. As a result, the veins collapse and are gradually absorbed by the body's natural processes.

Prepping for the Treatment

  • Avoid Sun Exposure: Refrain from sun exposure for at least two weeks before the treatment. Sunburned or tanned skin can increase the risk of complications and reduce the effectiveness of the laser.
  • Stop Certain Medications: Your provider may advise you to discontinue Photosensitive medications (doxycycline, tetracycline and antibiotics ) and Retinoids ( tretinoin, adapalene, retin-A, etc) for at least 3 days prior.
  • Avoid Harsh Treatments: These may irritate the skin and it's best to avoid for 1-2 weeks prior to treatment (waxing, depilatories, etc.)
  • Avoid Skincare Products: Discontinue the use of exfoliants, retinoids, or other harsh skincare products about a week before your treatment. These can make your skin more sensitive and potentially increase the risk of irritation.
  •  Arrive with Clean Skin: Make sure to arrive at your appointment with clean, dry skin and without any makeup or skincare products.

What to Expect

Plan for aftercare, including avoiding sun exposure and using gentle, non-irritating skincare products as recommended by your provider. Also, be prepared for potential mild redness or swelling, which usually resolves within a few days.
